Septic tanks are found around the world as they help to make an effective solution for dealing with household waste. Most of the time we are not even aware they’re even there – except for when problems arise. While septic tanks rarely experience issues, there may come a time when yours need to be pumped out, which is a job best left to the experts.
To know why yours might need pumping out, it can help to have a basic understanding of how septic tanks work.
How Do Septic Tanks Work?
When you flush your toilet, the waste will be carried through your plumbing and into your septic tank. And the septic tank does more than just store your waste, it also helps with the sewage treatment process.
A septic tank will have to be filled with water before it can start accepting waste. Bacteria in the water begin the process of breaking down the waste, making it easier to process later on. Your septic tank will separate raw waste into two types of material which are wastewater and sludge.
The wastewater, also known as effluent, gets carried away to where the treatment process can continue. However, the sludge, which is more solid and denser, will accumulate at the bottom of the tank. Over time, this sludge will accumulate to the point where it will have to be removed.
There are numerous signs that your septic tank needs pumping out, including:
- Unpleasant odours near the tank.
- You have an overflow of liquid waste from the disconnector tap.
- The water in your toilet drains away slowly after flushing.
- Effluent is an excellent fertilizer, and grass and other plants growing over the tank are likely to be greener and healthier than the rest.
- You get wet patches over the septic tank even when it’s not been raining.
If you notice any of these signs, or if you have other reasons to suspect something is wrong with your septic tank then get in touch. We can check the issue for you and let you know what work needs to be done, if any. Plus, of course, our talented and highly trained team can handle the task for you quickly and professionally.
Prevention is always the best cure, and an overfull septic tank is no exception. Pumping out the tank periodically will help prevent these problems in the first place, and it’s usually best to have your tank pumped out every four years or so. Again, our team will be more than happy to help.
